APC PDUs (Power Strips)

Supported Devices

The Packet Power WNC supports a variety of APC power strips (also known as PDUs), depending on the version of WNC firmware. The following models are supported:

AP78XX        Firmware version varies

AP79XX        Firmware version 36.2 and higher

AP88XX        Firmware version 36.4 and higher

AP86XX Firmware version 36.24 and higher

Setup procedures are similar, while the physical connections appear somewhat differently and the readings available depend on the models of APC device. This document will address them all. Supported devices include include the following.

Three-phase units:

  • APC AP7898

  • APC AP7998

  • Other AP7XXX three-phase devices may also work

  • APC AP8868

  • Other APC PDU AP88XX or AP89XX devices may also work

  • APC AP8653

Single-phase units:

  • APC AP7800

  • APC AP7832

  • Other APC PDU AP7XXX single-phase devices may also work

User Guide

This is a typical front panel of an APC PDU (single- or three-phase). This one has three banks of outlets (B1 - B3), an Ethernet port (the red cable is plugged into it), and a serial port for possible use in configuring the PDU.

The connections on a WNC are shown below. The other end of the Ethernet cable is in the middle. A 5v power supply is plugged into the far right.

Configuration and Connections

The PDU must be correctly configured before connecting the WNC. This is accomplished via the web console or the serial console. Please follow the instructions in the PDU user manual - see links above. The following static network settings must be configured:

IP address: 192.168.149.149

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Default gateway: 192.168.149.1

If the device is currently connected to an existing IP network and accessible, follow the instructions in the device's user manual section entitled "Administration: Network Features."

If the device is not already connected to an IP network, follow the instructions in the installation and quick start guide or the user manual. Look to the section entitled "TCP/IP configuration methods" to configure the device with a static IP address. Your options include using a local serial console connection (9600 baud, 8N1) or using the "APC Device IP Configuration Wizard" application running on a Windows PC.

Additionally, the factory reset process may disable the SNMPv1 interface, which must be re-enabled before connecting the WNC. Use a laptop to connect to the PDU web interface and re-enable SNMPv1.

AP8653

After a default, the AP8653 has its SNMP community string set to a cleared value. For the WNC to work, it requires this string to be changed to “public”.
